The Population Health Research Centre conducts research in epidemiology – the study of the distribution and determinants of human diseases – with particular focus on the following areas:
- Cardiovascular epidemiology
- Respiratory epidemiology
- Primary care epidemiology
- Genetic epidemiology
- Lifecourse epidemiology – focusing on studies of children and the elderly
- Environmental epidemiology – focusing on the effects of air pollution on public health
- Ophthalmic epidemiology
- Evidence-based healthcare
- Preventive medicine – with a focus on screening for sexually transmissible diseases and lifestyle modifications to reduce cardiovascular risk
The research centre hosts the Cochrane Airways Group – which is responsible for reviewing interventions for managing chronic respiratory disease – and is an active participant in several international consortia, particularly in the fields of respiratory and evidence based medicine. There are formal collaborative links with University College London (through the British Regional Heart Study), and with Imperial College and King's College London (through the Medical Research Council-Health Protection Agency Centre for Environment and Health).
