Getting to the heart of an athlete
Sanjay Sharma, professor of inherited cardiac disease in sport at St George's, University of London, is investigating the structural and electrical functioning of the heart and how it responds to exercise. His work focuses on establishing more knowledge about the normal parameters of athletes' hearts to ensure that they are not unnecessarily advised to abandon a sporting career. Professor Sharma will also be on hand during the games to offer cardiology support to Olympians.
