Teaching, assessment and accreditation
A variety of teaching methods are used throughout the three years of the course, including lectures, seminars, peer-assisted learning, case-based learning, simulated practical experience and clinical experience. Our teaching facilities include the Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training (VERT) and an interactive treatment planning system.
Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training (VERT)
As a therapeutic radiography student you will have a chance to practice your radiography skills in a safe and supportive environment using the latest Virtual Reality known as VERT.
- VERT creates a 3-dimensional treatment suite comprising the linear accelerator, the room in which it is situated, and the patient lying on the couch.
- Using state of the art tracking technology it also provides an interactive function for students to acquire a range of psychomotor skills necessary for the accurate delivery of radiotherapy.
This innovative equipment allows us to further enhance your teaching and learning experience.
Clinical placements
You will follow a rigorous clinical education programme, either at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (Sutton or Chelsea) and Royal Surrey County NHS Foundation Trust where you will acquire experience in a wide range of techniques and have an opportunity to put theory into practice and to consolidate learning experiences.
Therapeutic radiographers predominantly work in departments of radiotherapy treating patients. You will be well supported by your tutors whilst on placements and given plenty of guidance as to how to gain the greatest benefit from your experiences.
Assessment
Assessment is by a combination of academic coursework (including essays, reports and presentations), written and practical examinations, clinical assessments and a research dissertation in the final year.
Accreditation
On graduation you will be eligible to be considered for registration with the Health Professions Council and membership of the Society of Radiographers.
