Teaching and assessment
University modules
These are taught over the academic year on two sequential days per week. To give you plenty of notice, at the start of each module, we name the dates you will be required to come in. Health Professions Council (HPC) regulations state that these vital face-to-face learning days are mandatory.
As this is a blended learning course, a certain amount of study is done via the internet. In addition to the face-to-face teaching, you will be expected to devote an average of 20 hours per week to your course, using the online material supplied, supplemented by self-directed research and study.
Ambulance Service elements
Some module elements are taught by the ambulance service at ambulance training centres. A course plan for the year will tell you when to come to St George’s and when to go to the ambulance centres. The centres are based in London and are accessible by public transport.
We give you a timetable when you start your degree; but do remember that University modules and ambulance service elements will be mixed in delivery throughout the year, so your attendance levels will vary from module to module.
These elements tend to be two week blocks but you will be required to attend Monday to Friday 8.30am - 16.30pm throughout these blocks. You will be informed in good time of the details regarding attendance at the centres.
Again, it is vitally important and expected that you be available to attend the face-to-face days. You will be given a timetable when you start the programme, but it is important to know that the University modules and Ambulance Service elements are timetabled to mix in delivery throughout the year.
You should also be aware that due to the structure of the programme, level of content and the amount of self-directed study time expected by each student, having a full-time or part-time job while studying for the programme is not recommended.
Assessment
The course uses a range of assessment methods including:
- assignments/essays /reports
- multiple choice exams
- presentations
- clinical practice assessments
For you to be eligible to receive the award at the end of the programme you must pass all the course assessments.
Accreditation
This course is approved by the Health Professions Council (HPC), so once you have successfully completed it, you will be eligible to apply for registration as a paramedic.
Once enrolled, you can apply for student membership of the British Paramedic Association. This can be upgraded to full membership following graduation and registration with the HPC.
