Entry requirements

UK entry requirements stated are the minimum entry requirements for applications.

The general entry requirements for the Paramedic Science Foundation Degree are a minimum of five GCSEs with grades A*- C, including English Language, Maths and Dual Award Science, grades BCC at A2 Level, to include at least one science subject, relevant work experience and satisfactory health and police checks. Please note that we can only consider formally assessed and certified qualifications.

With the exception of GCSEs, all entry qualifications must be completed within a 5 year period including year of application.  If your last academic qualification is over the 5 year limit, then you will need to undertake a further period of study.  We do not consider professional or work based qualifications to be academic and therefore these are not acceptable for entry.

expandUK Qualifications

A minimum of five subjects at grade A* to C or equivalent, including English Language, Maths and Dual Award Science (or three separate sciences)

If English Language is not achieved at GCSE (A*-C) or English is not your first language, you must pass the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or its equivalent. Your overall score must be 7.0 (with no element less than 6.5). We will only consider one set of results per year - re-sits are not accepted. 

A Levels

BCC at A2 Level to include at least one science subject*. We do not accept applicants who are taking A Levels over three years but applicants may re-sit modules throughout years 12 and 13. Actual or predicted grades will be taken into consideration when assessing applications. AS Level, General Studies and Key Skills will not be accepted as qualifying subjects.

International Baccalaureate

Applicants must qualify for the full award of the diploma (including Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay modules). We will consider actual/predicted overall scores of 24 points or above, with 544 at Higher Level and 444 at Standard Level.  Either Biology or Chemistry must be taken to Higher Level with 5 as a minimum score. At application it is essential that we are provided with full predictions/achieved grades for each subject as well as the overall diploma score.

14-19 Diploma

Advanced Diploma in the following lines of learning with a minimum of grade C for the Diploma overall and a minimum of grade C for the A2 Level in a science subject* as the Additional and Specialist Learning subject:

  • Construction and the built environment
  • Engineering
  • IT
  • Health, society and development
  • Business administration and finance
  • Environmental and land-based studies
  • Hospitality
  • Manufacturing and product design

*Please note that the following subjects are considered science-based: Biology, Chemistry, Geology, IT, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physical Education, Physics, Psychology, Sociology, Sports and Physical Education.

Access Diploma

You are required to achieve the full diploma with a minimum of 60 credits. If you do not have GCSE A* to C grades in English Language and Maths you must achieve a minimum of 12 credits within each GCSE equivalent module at Level 2 only. All units must be verified as GCSE-equivalent by the local OCN. Please note that these Level 2 credits are in addition to the 60 credit diploma.

You will be expected to achieve 60 credits at Level 3 of which at least 18 must be graded at Distinction with the remaining 27 credits graded at Merit level. 27 of the 60 credits at Level 3 must be in biological or science related modules (e.g. biology, biological science and health sciences) and included within the 27 science credits. These science credits must be graded at Distinction or Merit and included within the diploma calculations.

Please note that additional Level 3 credits outside of the 60 credit diploma will not be accepted. However the additional 24, Level 2 GCSE equivalent credits will be accepted outside of the diploma. If you are in doubt about your Access course you should arrange for your college to send a course content syllabus for the Admissions Tutor to approve prior to submission of your application. BTEC National Certificate/Diploma

Applicants with National Diplomas or Certificates in healthcare-related subjects will be considered. A minimum of 260 UCAS points must be achieved, i.e. minimum of a Distinction-Merit-Merit must be achieved for a BTEC National Diploma and a BTEC National Certificate must be supplemented by an additional A2 Level.

BTEC National Diploma in Public Services will be considered if supplemented with an additional Science A-level (or equivalent).

Open University

Please note that if you are undertaking the following qualification you must provide evidence of GCSE English Language and Maths at minimum grade C.

Applicants offering OU qualifications are expected to achieve the following: 90 credits overall to include undergraduate Open University course Exploring Science (60 credits). If you do not have GCSE Maths at grad A*-C you must achieve 30 credits in the Discovering Mathematics course. If you have Maths at GCSE you can select any other science, social science or healthcare units totalling 30 credits.

Please note that all results must be received and verified by us by 1 September in the year of entry and applicants studying with the Open University should bear this in mind.

University of East Anglia - Certificate of Higher Education in Emergency Medical Care

Please note that if you are undertaking the following qualification you must provide evidence of GCSE English Language and Maths at minimum grade C.

We will consider the University of East Anglia Certificate of Higher Education in Emergency Medical Care course. Applicants who complete the programme to the full 120 credit level will normally be considered for interview. Please be aware that this programme comes as a one year 60 credit course and two year 120 credit course. We will only accept the latter.

Birkbeck, University of London - Certificate in Life Science

Please note that if you are undertaking the following qualification you must provide evidence of GCSE English Language and Maths at minimum grade C.

We will consider the Birkbeck University of London Certificate in Life Sciences course. Applicants who are predicted Merit-Merit or above will normally be considered for interview

Graduate entry

We welcome applications from graduates holding a science or healthcare related degree which was awarded within the last 5 years. This must have been achieved at 2:2 level. 

Applicants with appropriate healthcare degrees and clinical experience will be eligible to join the Paramedic Science Foundation Degree in Year Two, providing they have completed a short course in Ambulance Clinical Skills.

A suitable healthcare degree would be in medicine, nursing, physiotherapy or dentistry, with a minimum of six months relevant post-qualification clinical experience. Alternatively, you might be a health science graduate in, for example, physiology or sports science, with a minimum of six months relevant post-qualification clinical experience.

Please note that although UK NARIC may verify that your qualification meets the overall academic condition, there is no guarantee that it will meet our entry requirements, as we may consider marks in individual subjects (especially English Language, Maths and Science), and the admissions tutor’s decision is final.

If you obtained your qualification(s) more than five years ago, you would be expected to complete an additional qualification as below:

If you have a Science qualification, you would need to complete an additional A Level (grade A*-C) or course which would ensure that your combined qualifications meet our standard minimum 260 UCAS points entry requirements.

If you have a non-Science based qualification you would need to complete an additional Science A Level (grade A*-C) or course which would ensure that your combined qualifications meet our standard minimum 260 UCAS points entry requirements.

Graduates who obtained a science or healthcare related degree more than 5 years ago are expected to complete an additional A-level (grade A*-C) or to take 60 Open University credits.

Graduates who have obtained a non-science or healthcare related degree more than five years ago are expected to complete an additional Science A-level (grade A*-C) or to take the 60 credit Open University 'Exploring Science' course.

You must be classed as a ‘home’ student. Home students are from the UK/EU or EEA (see the list of EU/EEA countries). This includes UK or EU nationals and candidates with indefinite leave to remain. Students from other countries are overseas students. In some cases, however, you may need advice about your status, for example if you have lived abroad for a while. Please ask us if you are in doubt, or refer to the UKCISA website. At present students from outside the EU are not accepted by St George’s for the Paramedic Science Foundation Degree.

Work experience

All applicants should demonstrate relevant work experience within a health and social care setting, and it is essential that these work experiences are detailed within your personal statement as this forms part of the selection process. 

Should you be invited to an interview, you will be asked to submit evidence of all work experience listed on your UCAS form. On the day of your interview you will be required to provide a letter from each organisation where you gained relevant work experience. The letter(s) should be printed on headed paper and signed, giving the full contact details of the signatory. The letter(s) should contain details of the dates, number of hours, days and weeks over which you carried out this work experience and a brief description of the work undertaken. If you gain any work experience between completing your UCAS form and being called for interview, you can also submit letters for this. 

Before starting the course, you must also undergo health and police screening, including a screen for and immunisation against Hepatitis B.

Driving licence

As a registered paramedic you are not required to hold a driving license. However to obtain employment following the programme it is highly recommended that you have a current driving license with no more than 3 points.

Deferred entry

We welcome applications from candidates who wish to defer entry to this course by a year, provided they plan to use the time constructively. If offered a place, you must inform us by 1 June of the year of entry if you wish to defer.

Once enrolled on the course, you can apply for student membership of the British Paramedic Association, the UK's paramedic professional body. This can be upgraded to full membership following graduation and registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC).

Mature students

We welcome applications from mature students. There is no upper age limit for this course.
