Course details

This foundation degree is an innovative structure of blended learning, comprising online learning, classroom and training centre-based teaching, and practice-based activities. The weeks at St George’s usually consist of two sequential days at the campus attending lectures, tutorials, skills workshops and scenario-based learning. Online learning will be undertaken flexibly during the remainder of the week. This structure applies throughout both years. Years one and two are based at St George’s and the ambulance centres. Year two also incorporates hospital placements.

We work collaboratively with the London Ambulance Service (LAS) and other health trusts. Together we design, deliver and evaluate programmes for paramedics, ensuring the course remains relevant to evolving and best practice.

Practice placements

Practice placements form an integral part of the course. They occur throughout the course and there is integration between university and practice based learning. Over the course you will take approximately 1500 hours of clinical practice in a range of settings including;

  • emergency ambulances
  • operating theatres
  • emergency departments
  • medical assessment units

The ambulance placements will be at ambulance stations in London and the hospital placements will be in hospitals in the south west London area.

In year one you will undertake 20 weeks of clinical placements at ambulance stations throughout London.

In year two you will undertake eight weeks of hospital placement and 15 weeks of ambulance placements. Therefore your course learning outcomes may be achieved in a variety of placement settings. During these placements you will be supported by an appropriately qualified person.
