Teaching and assessment
The course features a variety of teaching methods including lectures and laboratory practicals, tutorial teaching (including scientific problem based learning), self-directed learning schemes and computer-assisted learning programmes.
Programme accreditation is awarded by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) which provides access to the professional body membership. Student module selection in the final year will influence whether an IBMS-accredited degree may be awarded. For example, students selecting psychology and psychiatry related modules will not be entitled to an IBMS-accredited degree.
Performance is judged by a mixture of in-course assessment and written exams, and each year’s marks contribute to your final degree outcome.
A variety of examination types may be used during the course. These include:
- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), where, in response to a short question or statement, you select answers as being true or false
- Short Answer Questions (SAQs), where you give a short written response to a question
- Extended Matching Items (EMIs) or Single Best Answer Questions (SBAs), where you select an answer from a range of given possible responses
- Essay questions
- Practical examinations
- Oral examinations, where you answer questions from a panel of examiners.
