  • Extreme Endurance: Polar Explorers and St George's, November 2009

St George's alumni Dr Mike Stroud OBE and Dr Ed Coats, gave guests a fascinating insight into the effects on the human body of undergoing polar and extreme expeditions.

Ed, a relative newcomer to the field, talked about the mental and emotional impact, as much as the physical impact, of enduring a race to the South Pole earlier this year with Olympic rower James Cracknell and TV presenter Ben Fogle.

Mike, a seasoned pro, having completed a number of expeditions to Poles North and South and, at the other extreme, running the 5-day Marathon des Sables in the Sahara, was able to share data on the physical effects, particularly in relation to body temperature and energy consumption.

Dr Isobel Williams, biographer of explorer and naturalist Edward Wilson, herself an alumna, hosted the evening and chaired a Q&A session following the talks.
