Information for schools, colleges and universities

Information for school and college staff (and other advisers)
The vast majority of the events we run for local students are arranged through individual schools and colleges.

Primary schools

The Primary Practice after-school club offers Year 5 and Year 6 pupils the opportunity to learn more about medicine and healthcare by taking part in practical activities and teaching them new skills such as basic first aid. The course is delivered by fully trained St George’s Student Ambassadors, and has been designed to develop pupils’ scientific knowledge and enhance their confidence and teamworking skills at this important time of their education.

Primary Practice is open to Primary Schools local to St George’s (Wandsworth), and runs from January each year.

Please contact Helen White, Widening Participation Officer, for further information.

Experiments Roadshows are designed to raise young people’s aspirations and increase their awareness of a range of educational and career opportunities in medicine and healthcare. They consist of a set of fun-filled, interactive sessions delivered by fully trained St George’s student volunteers that bring a range of healthcare professions to life.  We currently have five Roadshows to choose from: Prosthetics, Radiography, Physiotherapy, Para Medicine and Healthy Living.

Roadshows run from the mid-November to the end of April each year, take place at your school or college and can be arranged upon request.

Clinical skills days

Schools are invited to spend a half or full day at St George’s following a specially designed programme of activities to give participants an insight into studying medicine and healthcare subjects at university.

Students will be able to develop and practise their clinical skills, including trying their hand at measuring blood pressure and heartrate and learning to intubate one of our training mannequins. In addition, there will be lots of information about the different careers in healthcare, and how to go about getting into them. Taught in small groups by current St George’s students, participants will also be able to find out first-hand about life at university.

Taster days are arranged for groups of up to 30 students and run from November to July.

Please contact Helen White, Widening Participation Officer, for further information.

St George's Student Tutors

The student tutoring project places current St George's students in local school classrooms on a regular basis over 6 weeks. The students act as support for the teacher and provide a positive role model, sharing their knowledge and their experiences of study. Our student tutors have worked from years 2 to 13, with a wide variety of schools, subjects and students.

If you are a school local to St George's and interested in finding out more then please contact the Widening Participation team, for further details.

St George’s Student Ambassador Scheme

The Student Ambassador programme gives St George’s students the opportunity to get involved with aspiration-raising projects in their local community. Student Ambassadors are at the heart of many of our projects and give up their time voluntarily.

In all of our projects, Student Ambassadors act as role models, talk about their own experiences of higher education, and encourage students to aim high. Student Ambassadors receive full training and support from the Widening Participation office and undergo a Criminal Records Bureau check before they go into schools.

We are always happy to hear from schools and colleges that need Student Ambassadors to help out with their own in-house activities (for example, industry days), and will try to facilitate this wherever possible.

Please contact the Widening Participation Coordinator for further information.

Working with Young People in Care

In 2010 St George's was awarded the Frank Buttle Trust Quality Mark as an indication of our commitment to supporting students who have been in public care. As part of our commitment to encouraging those who have the potential to make a positive contributions to the life of St George's and to the NHS workforce we are finding new ways to engage with and support young people with experience of the care system, as well as ensuring that our support systems for current and potential students meets the needs of care leavers. We have made a commitment to working with local authorities and those who support the needs of care experienced students in a way that is responsive to the needs of those students. If you are interested in learning more about our existing programme of activities or how we can support you or your students please contact us:
