Going Down the Tubes

Caring for patients with tracheostomy tubes — a practical training programme

Going Down The Tubes is a practical training video for healthcare practitioners who undertake to care for patients with tracheostomy tubes.

Using patients in clinical situations and video animations, the programme includes: indications for and complications of a tracheostomy, types of tracheostomy procedure and tubes commonly used. The general-care section demonstrates how to clean, dress, secure, perform endotracheal suctioning and care for a tube with an inner cannula. The video concludes with a description of weaning, swallowing, communication and decannulation.

The film is intended to assist in staff-development programmes for health professionals who care for this patient group, and complements the tracheostomy guidelines available free from SIMS Portex, Hythe Kent.
