Asymptomatic Carotid Emboli Study

Aim

Better methods are required to identify high risk patients with asymptomatic carotid stenosis who may be suitable for endarterectomy.  Previous small studies have suggested that the presence of asymptomatic embolic signals detected using transcranial Doppler ultrasound may identify a high risk group.  ACES is a large multicentre international prospective study which will determine whether asymptomatic emboli detected in the middle cerebral artery are an independent predictor of stroke and TIA risk in patients with asymptomatic carotid stenosis (>70%).

Recruitment

Recruitment is now complete. 484 subjects were recruited with asymptomatic carotid stenosis. Follow-p is ongoing and is scheduled to end by September 2009.
