Biomedical Sciences

The Biomedical Sciences Division is made up of two research centres working in the fields of molecular cell biology, ion signalling and human genetics and perinatal and paediatric medicine.

The Wellcome Trust has funded a major ‘Twins UK’ initiative (£1.6 million) in collaboration with St Thomas’ Hospital over four years, enabling a number of twin-based studies to be carried out. The Birth Defects Foundation, now known as the New Life Foundation, continues in its generous funding of several research projects in Human Genetics.  Other programme and project grants have come from a variety of sources including the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and other charities.
